Vaxpropp

Vaxpropp is a term of Swedish origin that translates to "wax plug" or "earwax plug." It refers to a blockage in the ear canal caused by an accumulation of earwax. Earwax, medically known as cerumen, is a natural secretion produced by glands in the ear canal. Its function is to protect the ear by trapping dust, debris, and microorganisms, and it also lubricates the ear canal.

Normally, earwax migrates out of the ear canal on its own, typically with jaw movements like chewing. However, in some individuals, this natural cleaning process is impaired, leading to a buildup of wax. Factors contributing to vaxpropp can include excessive wax production, narrow ear canals, the use of cotton swabs which can push wax deeper into the canal, and the wearing of hearing aids or earplugs.

Symptoms of a vaxpropp can vary but often include a feeling of fullness in the ear, muffled hearing or hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), dizziness, and sometimes earache. The severity of symptoms often depends on the degree of blockage.

Diagnosis is typically made through visual inspection of the ear canal using an otoscope. Treatment for vaxpropp usually involves softening the wax with ear drops, which can be over-the-counter or prescribed by a doctor, followed by irrigation of the ear canal with warm water or saline solution. In some cases, manual removal by a healthcare professional using specialized instruments may be necessary. It is generally advised not to attempt self-removal using sharp objects due to the risk of injury to the ear canal or eardrum.
