Vastettaan is a term used in theoretical linguistics to denote an imagined grammatical category that encodes a respondent’s act of answering within a sentence. It is not part of standard Finnish grammar, and no authoritative references recognize it as an actual feature of any documented language.

Origin and conception. The name combines the Finnish verb vastata (to answer) with a common passive-like suffix pattern observed in Finnish, here applied hypothetically to signal a response event. In sources that discuss vastettaan, the form is treated as a tool for illustrating how a language might encode the act of replying as a distinct grammatical category rather than as a straightforward verb phrase.

Theoretical status and function. As a fictional or hypothetical construct, vastettaan would be analyzed as a cross-clause marker indicating that content in the clause represents a direct response to a prior prompt or question.
