Vastavusmärgis

Vastavusmärgis is a term used in Estonian to denote a conformity mark, a symbol or label attached to a product to show that it complies with applicable safety, health, environmental, and other requirements defined by relevant standards, directives, or regulations. It serves as evidence that the product has undergone the appropriate conformity assessment procedure and meets the criteria set by the issuing authorities or notified bodies.

In the European Union and the European Economic Area, the most widely recognized conformity mark is the CE marking. It indicates that a product satisfied EU harmonization directives and can be marketed throughout the internal market. Other sectors may require additional or national marks, but vastavusmärgis generally reflects a broader idea of conformity to defined rules rather than a single symbol.

The process typically involves identifying the applicable requirements, conducting testing and risk assessment, compiling technical documentation, and performing the chosen conformity assessment procedure. Depending on the product category, the manufacturer may perform a self-declaration of conformity or involve a notified body. After successful assessment, the manufacturer issues a Declaration of Conformity and affixes the vastavusmärgis to the product, its packaging, or accompanying documentation. Post-market surveillance, market inspections, and recalls may be required if non-conformities are discovered.

Legally, vastavusmärgis is part of a regulatory framework that aims to ensure consumer protection and fair market competition. In Estonia, national authorities oversee enforcement, with penalties for non-compliance and measures such as withdrawal of non-conforming products. The mark signals conformity to specified requirements, not an intrinsic guarantee of quality.
