Varmistuskoodina refers to the use of a specific numeric or alphanumeric code as a means of confirming identity or authorizing a transaction. The term is primarily used in Finland to describe a one-time code that is sent to a user via SMS, email, or an authenticator app. When the user enters the code on the requested service, the system verifies that the code matches the one generated for that session, thereby confirming that the user is the legitimate account holder or has permission to proceed.

The concept is an integral part of two‑factor authentication (2FA) and account recovery processes across a wide range of sectors, including banking, mobile carriers, government services, and online businesses. In the financial sector, regulatory bodies such as the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority require the use of vahvistuskoodina (confirmation code) for certain high‑risk transactions in order to reduce fraud. Telecom operators distribute alphanumerical verification codes as a part of SIM card activation or mobile number transfer procedures.

Implementations vary, but the underlying principles remain the same: the code is time‑bounded, typically valid for five to ten minutes, and the same code cannot be reused and is refreshed after each transaction.
