Varastokeskus

Varastokeskus is a central storage facility in Finnish logistics and supply chains. The term describes a warehouse or distribution hub dedicated to storing goods on behalf of a business, often located near production sites or transportation networks to support efficient distribution. A varastokeskus typically functions as a hub where incoming goods are received, inspected, and stored; inventory is tracked and managed; and items are picked, packed, and dispatched to customers or other warehouses. Some facilities also employ cross-docking, where shipments are transferred directly from inbound to outbound transport with little or no long-term storage.

Key features of a varastokeskus include substantial storage space, appropriate racking and handling equipment, loading docks, and an information technology layer such as a warehouse management system (WMS) integrated with the company’s ERP. This setup enables real-time inventory visibility, accurate order fulfilment, and efficient yard and transport management. Varastokeskus facilities vary in type from large central warehouses to regional distribution centers and can be automated or semi-automated. Specialized variants include cold storage for perishables, high-value goods, or hazardous materials.
