Vapaapainilla

Vapaapainilla, often translated as "freestyle wrestling" in English, is a style of amateur wrestling. It is one of the two styles contested at the Olympic Games, the other being Greco-Roman wrestling. In vapaapainilla, wrestlers can use a wide range of techniques involving both upper and lower body. This includes throws, takedowns, holds, and pinning combinations. Unlike Greco-Roman wrestling, vapaapainilla allows wrestlers to attack their opponent's legs and use their own legs for control and offense.

The objective in vapaapainilla is to score points by executing holds and maneuvers that demonstrate control over the opponent, or by achieving a pin, which is holding the opponent's shoulders to the mat for a specified duration. Matches typically consist of two periods, with a short break in between. Wrestlers are paired based on weight classes to ensure fair competition.

Vapaapainilla emphasizes athleticism, strength, speed, and strategic thinking. It requires a comprehensive understanding of body mechanics and leverage. The sport is practiced globally and is a significant part of many national sports programs, particularly in countries with a strong wrestling tradition.
