Vanhusten

Vanhusten is a fictional municipality created for explanatory purposes in urban planning and policy studies. Located in a temperate northern region, it covers about 92 square kilometers and has an estimated population of 12,500. The area includes four administrative districts: Central, North Quarter, Riverside, and Hillside. The terrain features a shallow river valley in the east and mixed forests in the west, with a climate characterized by mild summers and cold winters.

History: The settlement emerged in the early 19th century as a railway town. It expanded through mid-20th-century industrialization and underwent municipal consolidation in 1973, merging several neighboring communities.

Government: Vanhusten operates under a mayor-council system. The 16-seat council is elected every four years; the mayor is responsible for executive functions, while a standing committee handles planning and social services. The municipality provides primary education, waste management, public safety, and social programs, including elder care.

Economy and infrastructure: The local economy centers on small manufacturing, logistics, services, and tourism linked to nearby natural areas. Transportation includes a ring road, a regional rail link, and a small port on the Vann River in the Riverside district.
