Valulevyt
Valulevyt is a fictional category of disc-like data storage devices that appears in Finnish-language speculative fiction and related media. The name is typically interpreted as “value plates,” from a Finnish root suggesting value and the word levyt meaning plates or discs. In most depictions, valulevyt are compact, flat discs made from a ceramic or polymer composite. They encode information through nanoscale inscriptions or microscopic reservoirs that carry value-coded data. Reading devices use noncontact methods, combining optical, acoustic, or resonant sensing to retrieve stored information while preserving the disk.
In-world use, valulevyt function as portable, nonvolatile memory and as tokens of value within imagined economies.
