Vallihautas

Vallihautas refers to a type of prehistoric underground chamber found in Finland and other parts of Northern Europe. The term is derived from the Finnish language, with "valli" meaning "enclosure" or "fortress," and "hauta" meaning "grave" or "burial site."

These structures are typically small, measured in meters rather than kilometers, and are often shallow, ranging from 1 to 3 meters deep. Vallihautas can be found in areas with dense forests and clay soils, which are conducive to the formation of these underground cavities. They are usually composed of natural rock and soil, with some examples exhibiting evidence of anthropogenic modification.

The purpose and function of vallihautas are not well understood, and their study has sparked ongoing debate among archaeologists.
