Valkaisussa is a Finnish term meaning "in bleaching" or "during whitening," used to describe processes and contexts in which a substance, material or surface is made lighter or whiter. The concept covers a range of chemical, physical and biological treatments applied in both industrial and domestic settings.

In textiles and paper production, valkaisussa historically relied on sunlight and alkaline washes, while modern industrial bleaching uses oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide and, in some processes, chlorine dioxide. Contemporary pulp and paper mills commonly adopt elemental chlorine‑free (ECF) or totally chlorine‑free (TCF) methods to reduce formation of toxic byproducts. In personal care, valkaisussa refers to cosmetic practices like hair bleaching and tooth whitening. Hair bleaching typically involves peroxide-based oxidizers, sometimes combined with alkaline agents to open the hair cuticle; dental whitening mostly uses controlled peroxide gels applied clinically or via over‑the‑counter products. Certain bleaching agents can generate hazardous byproducts or require careful handling and disposal, prompting regulatory limits and development of milder technologies.
