Valistus, commonly translated as the Enlightenment, refers to a broad European intellectual and cultural movement that emerged in the 17th century and reached its height in the 18th century. It emphasized reason, empirical science, and critical thinking as foundations for knowledge and social progress. Core ideas included natural rights, religious toleration, secular governance, education for all, and the reform of political and legal institutions through rational inquiry.
