Valamu

Valamu is a washbasin or sink used for washing hands, face, or dishes, commonly installed in bathrooms and kitchens. In Estonian usage, valamu denotes the basin portion of a sanitary fixture, and is typically paired with a faucet (kraan) and a drain connected to the waste system. Basins are designed to hold water in a bowl-shaped cavity and may include an overflow to prevent spilling.

Basins come in a range of shapes and mounting styles. Common configurations include wall-mounted basins, which attach directly to the wall; countertop or vessel-style basins that sit on top of a counter; and undermount basins, which are installed beneath a countertop for a streamlined edge. In kitchens, single- and double-basin layouts are common to accommodate different tasks. Materials vary by region and purpose, with ceramic or vitreous china remaining standard for bathrooms, while stainless steel and composite stone are popular for kitchens and commercial settings. Finishes range from glossy glaze to matte or textured surfaces.

Installation requires a proper plumbing connection to hot and cold water supplies and a drain with a trap. Typical sizes vary, but basins are chosen to fit counter or cabinet dimensions and user needs.

Maintenance involves regular cleaning with non-abrasive cleaners to preserve glaze or surface, avoiding acidic or abrasive agents that can damage finishes. Routine inspection of seals and mounting hardware helps prevent leaks.
