Vakautuessa

Vakautuessa is the present participle form of the Finnish verb vakautua, which directly translates into English as “to become solid” or “to solidify.” The suffix –essa is a locative case ending that indicates a state or continuous action. Therefore vakautuessa literally means “while it is becoming solid” or “in the process of solidifying.”

In scientific contexts the word is used primarily in geology, chemistry and materials science. It describes the phase transition of a substance from a liquid, gas or amorphous state into a crystalline or otherwise mechanically stable structure. For example, a melt cooling under controlled conditions is described as “puu vakautuessa,” when the residue of a liquid mixture is gradually hardening.
