Vahehindamine, also known as "buffering" in English, refers to the temporary disruption of a video or audio stream while it is being played. This phenomenon occurs when the device receiving the content cannot keep up with the data being transmitted, causing a pause or delay in playback. Buffering is a common issue in digital media consumption, particularly when streaming services like YouTube, Netflix, or other online platforms are used.

The process of buffering involves the device temporarily storing incoming data in a buffer—a small amount of memory—to ensure smooth playback. When the buffer is depleted faster than new data arrives, playback halts until enough data accumulates to continue. This delay is what users perceive as buffering. Factors contributing to buffering include slow internet connection speeds, high network latency, insufficient bandwidth, or server congestion.

To minimize buffering, users can optimize their internet connection by using wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, closing background applications that consume bandwidth, or upgrading their internet plan. Streaming providers also employ techniques such as adaptive bitrate streaming, where the quality of the video dynamically adjusts based on available bandwidth to maintain smooth playback.

While buffering is generally a minor inconvenience, severe or frequent occurrences may indicate underlying issues with the network or device performance. In professional settings, such as live broadcasts or video conferencing, buffering can significantly disrupt communication, necessitating robust infrastructure to prevent interruptions.
