Vaastupurushas

The Vaastupurusha is a cosmic entity central to Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian science of architecture and living. It is depicted as a male figure, often shown lying on his back, with his head pointing north or northeast, and his feet towards the south or southwest. This form represents the personification of the building site or the land itself. The Vaastupurusha is believed to inhabit every plot of land intended for construction, and his appeasement is considered crucial for the success and well-being of the inhabitants.

According to Vastu lore, during the creation of the universe, a powerful being emerged, causing chaos. To control him, the gods pinned him down in a specific posture, and this entity became the Vaastupurusha. His body is divided into numerous sections, each governed by a specific deity. When a building is constructed, it is designed in accordance with the Vaastupurusha mandala, a geometrical diagram representing his body, to ensure that the energies of the deities residing in his various parts are harmoniously integrated into the structure.

The placement of rooms, doors, windows, and even furniture is influenced by the Vaastupurusha mandala. Specific rituals, known as Vastu Puja, are performed before and during construction to invoke the Vaastupurusha, honor the resident deities, and neutralize any negative influences. The goal is to create a dwelling that is in balance with the cosmic energies, promoting health, wealth, prosperity, and peace for its occupants. Ignoring the principles of Vastu and thus disrespecting the Vaastupurusha is believed to lead to misfortune and disharmony.
