Vaalissan

Vaalissan is a fictional city-state in the world of Thalor. Located on the lower Vaal River delta, it functions as a major maritime and inland trade hub, connecting inland caravan routes with seaborne networks. The city is known for its glassware, shipyards, and diverse markets.

The name Vaalissan derives from the local tongue, often interpreted as "bright harbor" or "harbor of light." The delta comprises tidal channels, salt marshes, and the Glass Strait, a sheltered approach favored by merchants and fishermen alike.

Historically, Vaalissan emerged as a mercantile commune in the early second millennium and gradually attained republican status after coalitions among guild leaders. It expanded through alliance-based diplomacy and selective colonization of nearby isles, maintaining authority over its hinterland trade routes.

Current governance combines the Guild Assembly and the Harbor Assembly into a bicameral council, with a governor serving five-year terms. The economy centers on port services, shipbuilding, glassware production, and spice and timber trade. It issues its own currency, the vaal.

The population is ethnically diverse, reflecting centuries of migration from inland kingdoms and coastal settlements. Education is broadly accessible, and multilingualism is common. Cultural life centers on markets, public theaters, and festivals such as the Festival of Lanterns, which marks the harbor's seasonal turnover.
