VTEtä

VTEtä is a term that refers to Venous Thromboembolism, a serious medical condition. It encompasses two main types of blood clots: deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs. PE happens when a blood clot that has formed elsewhere in the body, most commonly in the legs, travels to the lungs and blocks one of the pulmonary arteries.

The formation of blood clots in VTEtä is often linked to factors that slow blood flow or damage the lining of blood vessels. Common risk factors include prolonged immobility, such as after surgery or during long journeys, certain medical conditions like cancer, and inherited clotting disorders. Obesity, smoking, and the use of hormone replacement therapy or oral contraceptives are also associated with an increased risk.

Symptoms of DVT can include swelling, pain, redness, and warmth in the affected limb, though some cases may be asymptomatic. PE symptoms are more varied and can include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain that worsens with breathing, coughing up blood, and rapid heart rate. If left untreated, VTEtä can lead to serious complications, including permanent leg damage or even death. Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like ultrasound or CT scans. Treatment usually involves anticoagulant medications, also known as blood thinners, to prevent further clot formation and reduce the risk of recurrence.
