VRO

vRO, short for vRealize Orchestrator, is a workflow automation platform developed by VMware. It provides a centralized environment to model, automate, and govern IT processes across VMware vSphere, private clouds, and many third-party systems. Originally released as vCenter Orchestrator (vCO), it was rebranded as vRealize Orchestrator and positioned as part of the VMware vRealize family.

The platform runs as a server that houses a library of workflows, actions, and related artifacts. Workflows are built with a visual designer and execute logic via a JavaScript-based scripting engine. vRO supports a plugin architecture, enabling connectors to a wide range of endpoints such as vSphere, Windows and Linux systems, REST and SOAP services, ticketing systems, storage platforms, and other enterprise tools. It provides management and automation surfaces through a client and a REST API, allowing workflows to be triggered from vCenter, from the vRO client, or from external systems, including integration with vRealize Automation for self-service orchestration.

Typical use cases include VM provisioning and lifecycle management, patch and compliance workflows, backup and recovery orchestration, network and storage tasks, and cross-system change workflows. By centralizing automation logic, vRO aims to improve consistency, reduce manual errors, accelerate service delivery, and enable governance over complex IT processes.

vRO is part of the VMware vRealize Suite and is commonly deployed in on-premises environments alongside VMware infrastructure and other enterprise tools. It supports extensibility through plugins and is used to automate both routine and complex multi-system operations.
