Utvecklingsförsening, or developmental delay, refers to a child not reaching developmental milestones at the expected age or pace. It is distinct from developmental disability, which typically implies a chronic or lifelong condition, though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably in informal contexts.

Commonly assessed domains include motor skills, language, social-emotional behavior, fine and gross motor coordination, and adaptive functioning such as self‑care. An atypical trajectory may be detected through routine pediatric check‑ups, screening tools, or concerns raised by parents or teachers.

Risk factors are broad. Perinatal complications (e.g., low birth weight, prematurity), genetic syndromes, exposure to toxins, chronic illness, or limited stimulation in the environment can all contribute. However, many cases lack a clear cause; in some individuals, delays resolve with time and supportive intervention.

Early identification is crucial. Pediatricians may refer children for developmental evaluation by a specialist (pediatric neurologist, psychologist, or developmental paediatrician). Assessment typically includes standardized tests and parental questionnaires.

Interventions are individualized. Speech therapy targets language deficits; occupational therapy supports fine motor and daily living skills; physical therapy improves gross motor function; and behavioural therapy may address social and cognitive challenges. Multidisciplinary teams often collaborate, and progress is monitored with periodic reassessment.

Epidemiological data suggest that roughly 5–10 % of children exhibit some form of developmental delay in early childhood, though incidence varies by diagnostic criteria and population. Early support improves school readiness and long‑term outcomes, underscoring the importance of accessible screening and resources for families.
