Utasterheléssel

Utasterheléssel is a term that appears in some older German-language medical texts and can be translated roughly as "uterine overdistension" or "uterine stretching." It describes a condition where the uterus becomes excessively enlarged, often due to factors that lead to an accumulation of fluid or a larger-than-normal fetal mass. This can occur in certain pregnancy complications.

Historically, the term might have been used to describe situations leading to a weakened uterine wall or impaired contractions, potentially complicating labor and delivery. Causes could include conditions such as polyhydramnios, where there is an excessive amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus, or multiple pregnancies, where the uterus must accommodate more than one fetus. Macrosomia, a condition of a significantly larger-than-average fetus, could also contribute.

The consequences of severe uterine overdistension can include increased risk of uterine rupture, postpartum hemorrhage, and difficulties with uterine involution (the process of the uterus returning to its normal size after childbirth). Modern obstetrics often uses more specific terminology to describe these underlying causes and their effects, but "utasterheléssel" serves as a historical descriptor for the phenomenon of excessive uterine stretching.
