Upanishadic refers to anything connected with the Upanishads, a group of ancient Indian scriptures that form the concluding portion of the Vedas. The Upanishads are primarily philosophical and contemplative texts, presenting inquiries into the nature of ultimate reality, the self, and the meaning of life. The term Upanishad is often interpreted as “sitting down near [the teacher],” signaling a tradition of intimate instruction between guru and student.

Dating and scope: The Upanishads were composed in Sanskrit over a broad period, generally dated from about the late first millennium BCE to the early centuries CE. They are part of the broader Vedic corpus, though they shift the focus from ritual sacrifice toward metaphysical inquiry. The collection is not uniform in style or doctrine; there are many texts, with several well-known ones considered principal or foundational, such as Isa, Kena, Katha, Praśna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Chandogya, and Brihadaranyaka.

Themes and method: Core concerns include the nature of Brahman (the ultimate reality) and Atman (the inner self), their relationship, and the path to liberation from birth and death (moksha). Dialogues, parables, and meditative inquiry are common techniques, and some passages employ the neti neti method—eliminating false notions to approach truth. The Upanishads present a range of metaphysical positions, from non-dual (advaita) to qualified non-dual and dualistic schools, influencing later Hindu philosophy and practice.
