Mundaka

Mundaka is a municipality in the Basque Country of northern Spain, located in the province of Biscay. It sits on the coast near the Urdaibai estuary and is part of the Busturialdea-Urdaibai region. The area lies within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its wetlands, beaches and biodiversity.

Historically a fishing and harbor town, Mundaka preserves a compact old quarter with narrow streets and traditional Basque houses. The parish church of Santa Maria de Mundaka is a notable landmark, and the harbor remains a working port for local fisheries and maritime activity.

International recognition comes from the Mundaka wave. At Laida beach, near the river mouth, a sandbar creates a deep left-hand break that has been described as one of the best waves in Europe and among the best in the world under suitable swells. The spot has hosted national and international surfing events and attracts surfers from around the globe when conditions align.
