Unscratchability

Unscratchability refers to the property of a material or surface to resist scratching. It is a desirable characteristic for many products, as scratches can detract from their appearance and sometimes compromise their functionality. The degree of unscratchability is often measured using various standardized tests, such as the Mohs hardness scale or pencil hardness tests, which assess a material's resistance to abrasion by a sharp object.

Factors influencing unscratchability include the inherent hardness of the material's chemical composition, its molecular structure, and the presence of any protective coatings or surface treatments. For example, diamond is known for its extreme hardness and thus high unscratchability, while soft plastics are easily scratched.
