Universitet is a higher education institution that provides undergraduate and graduate programs, conducts research, and awards academic degrees. The term is used in several languages, notably Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish, to refer to institutions of higher learning with a broad scope across disciplines.

Most universitets comprise faculties or departments organized around fields such as the sciences, engineering, the humanities, and social sciences. They conduct research across disciplines and often participate in knowledge transfer, collaboration with industry, and public service.

Historically, universities originated in medieval Europe as centers of scholarship. They evolved in the 19th and 20th centuries to emphasize research and professional training, expanding globally in the later 20th century. Globalization and technology have increased international cooperation and student mobility.

Governance and funding vary by country. Most universities have a central administration led by a rector or president and a governing body or senate. They receive public funding, tuition or fees, and competitive research grants, and are subject to quality assurance and accreditation processes.

Among regional variations, some countries designate separate institutions as colleges or institutes, while others include professional schools within universities. Degrees typically awarded include bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, with professional credentials in certain fields.
