Unirytmihäiriöt, often referred to as circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, are a group of conditions characterized by a disruption in the body's internal clock. This internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, regulates the sleep-wake cycle and other bodily functions over a roughly 24-hour period. When this rhythm is out of sync with the external environment, or with an individual's desired schedule, it can lead to difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, waking up, or experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness.

Common types of unirytmihäiriöt include delayed sleep phase disorder, where an individual's sleep-wake times are significantly later than desired, and advanced sleep phase disorder, where they occur much earlier. Jet lag disorder is a temporary disruption caused by rapid travel across multiple time zones. Shift work disorder affects individuals who work irregular hours, often at night, which conflicts with their natural sleep patterns. Irregular sleep-wake rhythm disorder is characterized by a lack of a consistent sleep-wake pattern.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough review of sleep history, lifestyle, and medical conditions. Sometimes, a sleep diary or actigraphy (using a wrist-worn device to track sleep-wake patterns) is used to gather more objective data. Treatment strategies vary depending on the specific disorder and may include chronotherapy (gradually shifting sleep times), light therapy (using bright light to reset the body clock), melatonin supplementation, and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia. Lifestyle adjustments, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule and creating an optimal sleep environment, are also crucial.
