UmbriaMarche

UmbriaMarche is a proposed, but not yet realized, merger of the Italian regions of Umbria and Marche. The concept of combining these two neighboring regions in central Italy has been discussed periodically as a means to create a larger, more unified administrative and economic entity. Proponents suggest that such a merger could lead to greater efficiency in public administration, improved infrastructure development, and a stronger voice in national and European affairs.

Umbria, landlocked and known for its rolling hills, medieval towns like Assisi and Perugia, and its rich history, is traditionally considered the green heart of Italy. Marche, with its extensive coastline along the Adriatic Sea, diverse landscapes ranging from mountains to beaches, and cities such as Ancona and Urbino, offers a contrasting but complementary set of characteristics.

The idea behind UmbriaMarche is to leverage the combined strengths of both regions. Umbria’s agricultural and artisanal traditions could be paired with Marche’s industrial and maritime sectors. Such a union would create a more substantial regional economy capable of competing more effectively. However, the practicalities of merging distinct administrative structures, cultural identities, and political interests present significant challenges. While the concept remains a topic of occasional debate, no concrete steps have been taken towards its implementation.
