Ultrasonicsbased refers to technologies and applications that utilize ultrasonic waves, which are sound waves with frequencies higher than the upper audible limit of human hearing, typically above 20 kHz. These high-frequency sound waves possess properties that make them useful in a wide range of fields. When transmitted through a medium, ultrasound waves can interact with it in various ways, depending on the frequency, intensity, and the properties of the medium itself.

One primary application of ultrasonicsbased technology is in imaging and detection. Ultrasonic transducers emit pulses of ultrasound and then receive the echoes that reflect off objects or boundaries within a material. By analyzing the time it takes for these echoes to return and their intensity, detailed images or information about the internal structure of an object can be generated. This principle is fundamental to medical ultrasound imaging, allowing non-invasive visualization of internal organs, fetuses, and other bodily structures. Similarly, in non-destructive testing (NDT), ultrasonicsbased methods are used to detect flaws, cracks, or defects within materials like metals, plastics, and composites without damaging the item being inspected.

Beyond imaging, ultrasonicsbased systems are employed for cleaning. High-intensity ultrasonic waves create cavitation in a liquid medium. Cavitation involves the formation and rapid collapse of microscopic bubbles, generating localized high temperatures and pressures. This intense scrubbing action effectively dislodges contaminants from surfaces, making ultrasonic cleaning highly effective for delicate or intricate items such as jewelry, medical instruments, and electronic components.

Other ultrasonicsbased applications include sonochemistry, where ultrasound enhances chemical reactions; sonofusion, a process for joining materials; and sonoporation, used to temporarily increase the permeability of cell membranes. The versatility of ultrasonic waves allows for their integration into a diverse array of industrial, medical, and scientific processes.
