Ultraäänihoitoa, known in English as ultrasound therapy, is a therapeutic modality used in physiotherapy and rehabilitation. It involves the application of high-frequency sound waves to the body's tissues. These sound waves are typically above the range of human hearing, usually in the range of 1 megahertz (MHz) to 3 megahertz (MHz).

The primary effects of ultrasound therapy are thermal and non-thermal. The thermal effects are due to the absorption of acoustic energy by tissues, which leads to an increase in temperature. This can help to increase blood flow, reduce muscle spasms, and decrease pain. The non-thermal effects, also known as mechanical effects, are produced by the cavitation and acoustic streaming that occur when ultrasound waves pass through tissues. Cavitation refers to the formation and collapse of tiny gas bubbles within the fluid medium of tissues, which can promote cellular activity and healing. Acoustic streaming is the movement of fluids within the tissue induced by the sound waves, which can aid in the diffusion of inflammatory substances and promote tissue repair.

Ultrasound therapy is commonly used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including muscle strains, ligament sprains, tendinitis, bursitis, and scar tissue. It is also employed to reduce pain and inflammation, promote tissue healing, and improve joint mobility. The treatment is typically administered by a trained therapist using a transducer that is moved over the affected area, often with a coupling medium such as gel to ensure good contact with the skin. The duration and intensity of the treatment vary depending on the condition being treated and the specific parameters chosen by the therapist. While generally considered safe, ultrasound therapy may have contraindications and should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
