Etymology and scope: The name derives from Finnish ulko- 'outside' and tila 'space' or 'room'. In practice, ulkotilojen describes a family of spaces—such as verandas, terraces, loggias, balconies, and courtyards—that are connected to the home. The term is used in planning guidelines and architectural literature to discuss the design and function of outdoor living areas.

Design and climate: Ulkotilojen are commonly designed with protection from wind and precipitation, using materials like timber, glass, and metal.
