Uchiwaza

Uchiwaza are a category of techniques in Japanese martial arts, particularly judo and aikido, which involve striking. The term "uchi" translates to "strike" or "hit," and "waza" means "technique." Therefore, uchiwaza can be broadly understood as striking techniques.

In judo, uchiwaza are not typically used in competition, as judo focuses on throws, grappling, and pins. However, they are part of the curriculum for self-defense and are taught in kata, pre-arranged forms that preserve older martial arts principles. Examples include strikes to vital points or the use of a forearm to block and strike simultaneously.

In aikido, uchiwaza are more integrated into the practice, though still distinct from the primary joint locks and throws. These strikes are often used to create openings, disrupt an opponent's balance, or as a follow-up to other techniques. They can be delivered with open hands, fists, or other parts of the body. The aim is often to strike with precision rather than brute force, targeting weak points or creating a distraction.

The philosophy behind uchiwaza in these arts often emphasizes efficient movement and the application of force rather than simply overpowering an opponent. They are considered fundamental movements that contribute to a well-rounded understanding of martial arts principles, even if not always the most visible techniques in sparring or competition.
