USBCaufHDMI refers to adapters and cables designed to convert a USB-C output into an HDMI input, allowing a device with a USB-C port to display video on an HDMI monitor or television. Typically this takes the form of a small dongle with a USB-C plug on one end and an HDMI port on the other, sometimes including a USB-C power input for charging the host device.

The functionality relies on the source device supporting DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt over USB-C. An onboard converter or transmitter handles the translation from the USB-C signal to HDMI, and some models incorporate a USB-C power delivery input to supply power to the host computer while in use.

Capabilities vary by model and port version. Many USB-C to HDMI adapters support high-definition output up to 4K resolution, with refresh rates commonly ranging from 30 to 60 Hz depending on the HDMI version and device constraints. Some adapters also carry audio through the HDMI connection. The inclusion of a power pass-through port can enable continued device charging during use, which is helpful for laptops and tablets.

Compatibility and limitations should be noted. Not all USB-C ports support video output, as this depends on the device’s hardware and software support for DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt. Some devices or operating systems may require specific drivers or may experience issues with HDCP-protected content. Performance can also be affected by cable quality, adapter chipset, and the capabilities of the connected display.
