Tætningsvæske

Tætningsvæske, often translated as sealant liquid or tire sealant, is a substance designed to repair punctures in pneumatic tires. It is typically a viscous liquid containing a mixture of polymers, fibers, and other additives. When a tire is punctured by a sharp object, such as a nail or thorn, the tætningsvæske is forced into the hole by the escaping air and the centrifugal force generated by the rotating wheel.

The components within the tætningsvæske react to the air and the damage. The polymers and fibers coagulate and solidify, forming a plug that seals the puncture. This process is often referred to as vulcanization or polymerization. The effectiveness of tætningsvæske can vary depending on the size and nature of the puncture, as well as the specific formulation of the product. Some tætningsvæsker are designed for temporary repairs, while others can provide a more permanent seal.

Tætningsvæske can be introduced into a tire in several ways. Some are injected through the valve stem, while others are already present within the tire when it is manufactured or installed. It is commonly used in bicycle tires, especially tubeless setups, and can also be found in some automotive emergency repair kits. While tætningsvæske can prevent the loss of air pressure, it is generally recommended to have damaged tires professionally inspected and repaired or replaced. The presence of tætningsvæske may sometimes make such repairs more challenging.
