Täysitekstindeksointi, also known as full-text indexing, is a technique used in information retrieval and search engines to index the contents of documents or web pages. Unlike traditional indexing methods that focus on keywords or metadata, full-text indexing processes and stores every word and phrase within a document, allowing for more comprehensive and accurate search results. This approach enables users to find documents that contain specific words or phrases, regardless of their position within the text.

The process of full-text indexing involves several steps. First, the text is tokenized, meaning it is broken down into individual words or tokens. These tokens are then processed to remove common words (stop words) that do not contribute significantly to the search, such as "and," "the," and "is." The remaining tokens are stemmed or lemmatized to reduce them to their base or root form, which helps in matching different forms of a word (e.g., "running" and "run").

Once the tokens are processed, they are indexed and stored in a data structure that allows for efficient retrieval. This structure typically includes an inverted index, which maps each token to the documents that contain it. When a user performs a search, the query is processed in the same way as the documents, and the search engine uses the inverted index to find and rank the relevant documents.

Full-text indexing is widely used in various applications, including search engines, digital libraries, and content management systems. It provides users with the ability to search for specific information within large collections of documents, making it a valuable tool for information retrieval and knowledge management. However, it also presents challenges related to performance, scalability, and the handling of large volumes of data.
