Tändkonfigurationer, or ignition configurations, refer to the arrangement and timing of ignition sources within an internal combustion engine. The primary goal of a tändkonfiguration is to ensure efficient and complete combustion of the fuel-air mixture within the cylinder at the optimal moment in the engine cycle. This timing is critical for maximizing power output, fuel efficiency, and minimizing emissions.

Different engine types and operating conditions necessitate various tändkonfigurationer. For spark-ignition gasoline engines, the most common configuration involves a single spark plug per cylinder, ignited by an electrical system that includes a battery, ignition coil, and distributor or electronic control unit (ECU). The ECU precisely controls the timing of the spark based on factors like engine speed, load, and temperature. In some high-performance or specialized engines, multiple spark plugs per cylinder might be employed to achieve more rapid and stable flame propagation.

Diesel engines, on the other hand, operate on the principle of compression ignition. They do not have spark plugs. Instead, the fuel is injected into highly compressed, hot air, causing it to auto-ignite. The "ignition configuration" in a diesel engine therefore relates to the timing and pattern of fuel injection, as well as the compression ratio and combustion chamber design, which are optimized for self-ignition.

The precise tändkonfiguration is a key factor in an engine's performance and emissions characteristics. Advanced engine management systems continuously monitor and adjust ignition timing to adapt to changing driving conditions, thereby optimizing the combustion process. Variations in fuel quality, altitude, and engine wear can also influence the ideal tändkonfiguration, highlighting the importance of sophisticated engine control.
