Täitevõimet, often translated as executive function, refers to a set of cognitive processes that help us regulate and control our thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. These are higher-level mental skills that allow us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully.

Core components of executive function include working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. Working memory is the ability to hold and manipulate information in our minds for a short period, crucial for tasks like following a recipe or understanding a complex sentence. Inhibitory control, also known as self-control, allows us to resist impulses, avoid distractions, and override automatic responses, enabling us to stop ourselves from saying something inappropriate or from giving in to immediate gratification. Cognitive flexibility, or mental shifting, is the capacity to switch between different tasks or ways of thinking, adapting to changing circumstances and finding creative solutions to problems.

These skills develop throughout childhood and adolescence, with significant maturation occurring in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. Deficits in executive function can be associated with various developmental disorders, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder, as well as with neurological conditions and aging. Strong executive function skills are vital for academic success, social interactions, and overall life management, contributing to effective problem-solving, goal attainment, and adaptive behavior.
