Tähdentäviä

Tähdentäviä is a Finnish term that translates loosely to "star-dusting" or "star-cleaning." It refers to a traditional, often superstitious, practice that was historically carried out in some rural Finnish communities. The core idea behind tähdentäviä was to symbolically or literally "cleanse" or "restore" the stars, particularly in the autumn and winter months when the nights were longest and the stars most visible.

The practice varied greatly from region to region and even from household to household. Some believed that the stars needed to be "brushed clean" of any accumulated darkness or impurities to ensure good fortune, a mild winter, or a successful harvest in the following year. Others saw it as a way to appease celestial beings or maintain a cosmic balance.

Methods employed in tähdentäviä were often symbolic. This could involve sweeping the sky with a broom from a doorway or window, or making specific gestures upwards with tools or household items. In some instances, it might have involved singing particular songs or reciting rhymes directed at the stars. There was no single, universally accepted method, and the act was often performed by elders in the family or community.
