The primary työstönopeus is the cutting speed, often denoted as v_c. This is the peripheral speed of the workpiece or the cutting tool relative to each other. Higher cutting speeds can lead to faster material removal rates, reducing cycle times. However, excessively high speeds can cause premature tool wear, generate excessive heat, and negatively impact surface quality. Conversely, lower cutting speeds might prolong tool life but result in longer machining times and reduced productivity.

Another important consideration is the feed rate, denoted as f. This is the distance the cutting tool advances per revolution of the workpiece or per pass of the tool. A higher feed rate generally increases the material removal rate but can also lead to a rougher surface finish and increased cutting forces, potentially damaging the tool or workpiece.

The depth of cut, denoted as a_p, is the thickness of the material removed in a single pass. A larger depth of cut removes more material per pass, increasing efficiency. However, it also requires more power and can induce greater stresses on the tool and workpiece.
