Työssäkäynnille is a Finnish phrase that literally translates to “for work start” and refers to the initial phase when a new employee starts working in a company. The concept is part of the broader onboarding process, which includes administrative registration, presentation of company policies, safety training, and introduction to coworkers and work tools. The term is most commonly used in recruitment and human resources documentation, as well as in internal communication, to mark the day or days when a hired person begins daily duties.

In Finnish employment practice, työssäkäynnille is not limited to formal orientation sessions. It also encompasses the first few weeks of observation, job shadowing, and gradual assumption of responsibilities. Many organisations schedule the first week as a “työssäkäynnin” period, during which a mentor or line manager provides guidance, sets short‑term goals, and evaluates the new employee’s integration into the team. This helps reduce the learning curve, improves job satisfaction, and supports compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.

The term is sometimes confused with “työpäivä” (workday) or “työn aloittaminen” (starting work). However, työssäkäynnille specifically implies the official commencement of employment, often accompanied by paperwork such as employment contracts, tax forms, and company ID issuance. In union‑led workplaces, a designated työssäkäynnillinen day may also be used to build solidarity through shared induction activities. The phrase is therefore an important part of labour terminology in Finland and is used across sectors to describe the structured entry of a new worker into the workforce.
