Työkalunvaihto, often translated as tool changer or automatic tool changer (ATC), refers to a mechanism used in machine tools to automatically replace the cutting tool during a machining operation. This automation is crucial for efficient production, particularly in CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machinery. A typical tool changer system consists of a tool magazine, which stores multiple tools, and a tool changer arm or a rotary turret that transfers the tools between the magazine and the machine's spindle.

The process begins when the machine's control system signals the need for a tool change. The spindle then moves to a designated position, often at a safe height or to a specific tool change position. The tool changer mechanism then unclamps the current tool from the spindle and removes it, typically placing it back into its designated slot in the magazine. Subsequently, the mechanism selects the next required tool from the magazine, inserts it into the spindle, and securely clamps it in place. This cycle allows for complex parts to be manufactured with minimal manual intervention, as different drilling, milling, or turning operations can be performed using a variety of tools without stopping the machine for manual tool replacement. The speed and accuracy of the tool changer are critical factors in overall machining productivity.
