It involves the selection and arrangement of typefaces, point sizes, line lengths, leading (the space between lines of text), kerning (the space between specific pairs of characters), and tracking (the overall space between characters in a block of text). The goal of good typography is to create a harmonious and effective visual communication.

The history of typography is closely tied to the development of printing. From early woodblock printing to Gutenberg's movable type, each advancement has shaped how text is presented. Modern typography encompasses both traditional print media and digital displays, requiring designers to consider a wide range of factors such as screen resolution, device size, and user experience.

Key elements of typography include typefaces (also known as fonts), which are collections of characters designed with a unified style. These can be serif (with small decorative strokes at the ends of letters) or sans-serif (without these strokes). The choice of typeface significantly impacts the mood and readability of a text.
