Typographer is a professional who specializes in the design, arrangement, and use of type in written communication. The typographer's work centers on selecting typefaces, creating typographic systems, and adjusting spacing and alignment to achieve legibility, balance, and visual rhythm across a given medium.

Key responsibilities include determining type hierarchy (font choices, sizes, and weights), setting measure, margins, leading, kerning, tracking, and justification; managing hyphenation and ligatures; and ensuring consistency with brand or editorial style. They collaborate with designers, editors, and developers to translate a message into readable and aesthetically coherent text layouts for print, digital, and environmental media.

Tools and techniques commonly used by typographers include desktop publishing and vector graphics software such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, as well as font editors and production tools. In digital contexts, typographers work with web typography using CSS, web fonts, and responsive techniques to maintain readability across devices.

Typographers distinguish their craft from font design and from general graphic design. Font designers create new typefaces; typographers focus on how type is used, spaced, and organized within a composition. In practice, many professionals combine elements of typography, layout design, and branding.

Historically, typographers evolved from metal typesetting to phototypesetting and modern digital typography, with influence from movements and grid-based design that emphasize legibility and structural clarity.
