Tyhjiömuovaus, also known as vacuum forming, is a manufacturing process that uses a heated sheet of plastic and a vacuum to form it over a mold. The process begins with a sheet of thermoplastic material that is heated until it becomes pliable. Once the plastic is sufficiently soft, it is draped over a mold, which can be made from various materials like wood, metal, or plaster. A vacuum is then applied from beneath the mold, which draws the softened plastic down and conforms it tightly to the shape of the mold. As the plastic cools, it solidifies in the desired shape. After cooling, the excess plastic is trimmed away.

This technique is suitable for producing a wide range of hollow parts and enclosures. Common applications include packaging, such as blister packs and trays, as well as components for appliances, automotive interiors, and even architectural elements. The advantages of vacuum forming include its relatively low tooling costs, making it cost-effective for both prototyping and medium-volume production runs. It can accommodate complex shapes and intricate details. However, the process is generally limited to producing parts with a single, relatively shallow draft angle due to the nature of vacuum pressure. The thickness of the plastic can also vary across the formed part, being thinner in areas that are stretched the most.
