Turvallisuusriskinä refers to a situation, condition, or factor that has the potential to cause harm, injury, loss, or damage. It is an inherent aspect of many activities and environments, and understanding and managing these risks is crucial for safety. A risk is typically assessed by considering both the likelihood of an event occurring and the severity of its potential consequences. For example, a slippery floor presents a safety risk because there is a likelihood of someone falling, and the consequence could be anything from a minor bruise to a serious fracture.

Identifying safety risks involves a systematic process of observation, analysis, and evaluation. This can include reviewing past incidents, conducting hazard assessments, and consulting with experts. Once identified, risks can be categorized based on their nature, such as physical risks (e.g., working at heights, operating machinery), chemical risks (e.g., exposure to hazardous substances), biological risks (e.g., infectious diseases), or psychosocial risks (e.g., workplace stress).

The management of safety risks typically follows a hierarchy of controls. This begins with elimination, where the risk is removed entirely. If elimination is not possible, substitution involves replacing the hazardous element with a less hazardous one. Engineering controls are then implemented to isolate people from the hazard. Administrative controls, such as procedures and training, are put in place to reduce exposure. Finally, personal protective equipment (PPE) is used as a last resort to protect individuals. The goal is to reduce the risk to an acceptable level, ensuring a safer environment for everyone.
