Turvaüleastumistest, often translated as security penetration testing or pentesting, is a simulated cyberattack against a computer system to identify security vulnerabilities that an attacker could exploit. The purpose of these tests is to proactively find and fix security weaknesses before malicious actors can. Pentesting can be performed manually or by using automated software tools.

There are several types of pentesting. White-box testing involves the tester having full knowledge of the system, including source code and network architecture. Black-box testing is conducted with no prior knowledge of the system, mimicking a real-world attacker. Gray-box testing falls in between, where the tester has partial knowledge of the system.

The process typically involves reconnaissance, scanning, gaining access, maintaining access, and covering tracks. During reconnaissance, testers gather information about the target. Scanning identifies open ports and services. Gaining access involves exploiting identified vulnerabilities. Maintaining access ensures persistent entry, and covering tracks attempts to remove evidence of the intrusion.

Regular security penetration testing is a crucial component of a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy. It helps organizations understand their security posture, prioritize remediation efforts, and comply with various regulations and standards. The results of a pentest are usually documented in a report detailing the vulnerabilities found, their severity, and recommendations for mitigation.
