Tunnelingtechnieken refer to the methods and equipment used to excavate and construct tunnels, which are underground passages. These techniques are employed in a wide variety of projects, including transportation infrastructure like road and rail tunnels, utility conduits for water, sewage, and power, and mining operations. The choice of tunneling technique depends heavily on factors such as geological conditions, tunnel diameter, required speed of construction, and cost considerations.

One common method is the drill and blast technique, where explosives are used to break up rock, followed by mucking out the debris. This is often used in hard rock conditions. Another widely used approach is mechanical excavation, primarily employing Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). TBMs are large, cylindrical machines that bore through the ground, simultaneously excavating and often lining the tunnel. Different types of TBMs exist, such as shielded TBMs for soft ground and hard rock TBMs for competent rock.

Cut-and-cover tunneling is a simpler method for shallow tunnels, especially in urban environments. It involves excavating an open trench, constructing the tunnel structure within it, and then backfilling over the top. For tunnels under water or in very soft ground, immersed tube tunnels are sometimes used, where prefabricated tunnel sections are floated into position and sunk into a dredged trench, then connected underwater.

Other techniques include the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), which relies on the inherent stability of the ground and uses monitoring and sequential excavation to support the tunnel. Each technique has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, impacting safety, cost, and environmental impact. The selection and application of the appropriate tunneling technique are critical for the successful and efficient completion of underground construction projects.
