Tundraforest

Tundraforest is a term used to describe a transitional biome located between the treeless Arctic tundra and the boreal forest. It is characterized by a sparse distribution of trees, often stunted or wind-swept, interspersed with open tundra vegetation such as mosses, lichens, sedges, and dwarf shrubs. This landscape is typically found in subarctic regions, forming a mosaic of open woodlands and shrubby meadows.

The development of tundraforest is influenced by a combination of factors, including latitude, climate, and soil conditions. The growing season is short, and temperatures remain cool throughout the year, limiting tree growth. Permafrost, a layer of permanently frozen ground, can also restrict root development and water drainage, further shaping the types of vegetation that can thrive. The trees present are often hardy species adapted to cold environments, such as black spruce, white spruce, or larch, but they grow at lower densities and heights than in the denser boreal forest to the south.

This biome plays an important ecological role, providing habitat for a variety of wildlife, including caribou, moose, arctic foxes, and numerous bird species. The presence of scattered trees offers shelter and food sources that are not available in the pure tundra. Tundraforest ecosystems are also sensitive to climate change, with warming temperatures potentially leading to changes in vegetation composition and the northward expansion of denser forests.
