Tulvasäiliöt, also known as storm water retention basins or detention basins, are man-made or natural depressions designed to temporarily store excess rainwater or meltwater runoff. Their primary purpose is to mitigate the negative impacts of urban stormwater, such as flooding and water pollution. When heavy rainfall occurs, instead of immediately overwhelming drainage systems and waterways, the water is directed into the tulvasäiliö.
