Tulostintyyppi refers to the classification of printers based on their underlying printing technology. This categorization helps users understand the mechanics, capabilities, and cost associated with different printing devices. The most common types include inkjet printers, laser printers, and thermal printers.

Inkjet printers operate by spraying tiny droplets of ink onto paper. They are known for their versatility, producing vibrant colors and detailed images, making them popular for home use and photo printing. However, their ink cartridges can be expensive, and print speeds may be slower than other types.

Laser printers utilize a laser beam to create an electrostatic image on a drum, which then attracts toner powder. This toner is fused onto the paper, resulting in sharp, durable text and graphics. Laser printers are generally faster and more cost-effective for high-volume text printing, often found in office environments. They typically do not excel at photo reproduction compared to inkjets.

Thermal printers, also known as thermal transfer or direct thermal printers, use heat to create an image. Direct thermal printers heat coated paper, causing it to darken, commonly seen in receipt printers. Thermal transfer printers use a heated ribbon to melt ink onto the label or paper, offering greater durability and a wider range of media compatibility, often used for shipping labels and barcodes.
