Tuletõkkeuksed, also known as fire doors, are specialized doors designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke for a specified period. They are a critical component of passive fire protection systems in buildings. The primary function of a tuletõkkeuks is to compartmentalize a building, containing a fire within the area where it originates and allowing occupants more time to evacuate safely.

The effectiveness of a tuletõkkeuks is measured by its fire resistance rating, typically expressed in minutes (e.g., EI60, EI120). This rating indicates how long the door can withstand fire exposure while maintaining its integrity and insulation properties. The "EI" designation refers to "integrity" (E) and "insulation" (I), meaning the door prevents the passage of flames and hot gases (integrity) and limits the temperature rise on the non-fire side (insulation).

Tuletõkkeuksed are constructed from materials that are inherently fire-resistant, such as steel, timber with fire-retardant treatments, or composite materials. They are typically fitted with self-closing devices to ensure they are always in the closed position. This is crucial, as an open fire door can render the entire fire protection system ineffective. Seals, often intumescent or smoke seals, are incorporated into the frame and door edges to prevent smoke penetration.

Installation of tuletõkkeuksed must be done by certified professionals to ensure they function as intended. They are commonly found in stairwells, corridors, escape routes, and between different fire compartments within residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Regular inspection and maintenance are essential to guarantee their continued performance in the event of a fire.
