Tsüklivõimet

Tsüklivõimet refers to the ability of a material to withstand repeated loading cycles. This phenomenon is also commonly known as fatigue. When a material is subjected to a cyclic stress, even if that stress is below its static yield strength, it can eventually lead to failure. This failure typically occurs at a lower stress level than would be required for a single, static load.

The process of fatigue damage involves the initiation and propagation of cracks. Under repeated stress, microscopic defects or stress concentrations within the material can become sites for crack initiation. As the cycles continue, these cracks grow larger. Eventually, when the crack reaches a critical size, the remaining cross-section of the material can no longer support the applied load, leading to sudden and catastrophic fracture.

The number of cycles a material can endure before failure is highly dependent on the applied stress level, the material's properties, and the presence of any surface defects or environmental factors. Higher stress amplitudes generally result in fewer cycles to failure, while lower stress amplitudes allow for a greater number of cycles. Materials with higher toughness and resistance to crack propagation tend to exhibit better tsüklivõimet. Understanding and predicting tsüklivõimet is crucial in engineering design, particularly for components that experience repeated stresses, such as aircraft wings, bridges, and rotating machinery.
